Mike grew up in the midwestern United States and after attending medical school at Columbia University in New York, completed his neurosurgery training at the University of California at San Francisco, one of the world’s elite brain tumour centers.
In 2011, he completed a fellowship at the Centre where he was one the best fellows to come through the Centre in its history. He then returned to the University of Oklahoma where he was the director of the brain tumour centre there at for 6 years, building the institute into one of the busiest units in the US. He has performed over 3000 brain tumour operations to date and has published almost 200 publications about brain tumours.
Despite these successes, he never forgot about Australia, the warmth and courage of the Australian people, and the great optimism of the nation. Ultimately, the idea of helping build the Centre into one of the world’s elite brain tumour and research institutes became too hard to resist. Coming back to Australia is, in a way, returning home for him and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him back.
In addition to helping bring a second stellar brain tumour surgeon to the team, Mike brings many cutting edge new ideas for treating brain tumor patients, and an intense desire to drive research in brain tumor science forward. We are committed that when brain cancer is finally defeated, Sydney is going to be one place where it happened.
